7 Common Storefront Door Problems
(And How to Fix Them)
1. The "Guillotine" Door (The Slammer)
This is probably the most common thing we see. You open the door, let go, and BAM! It swings shut way too fast.
Your door has a box at the top called a commercial door closer. Inside that box is hydraulic oil and a heavy spring. If that oil leaks out, the door loses its brakes.
This is a huge liability. If a customer’s hand or finger gets caught, it’s going to cause a serious injury. It also puts massive stress on the glass, which can lead to cracks over time.
The Friendly Fix: Sometimes we can just turn a few adjustment screws to help the speed, but if it’s leaking, it’s time for a new closer. We’ll swap it out for a heavy-duty version that can handle the wind and the constant foot traffic of a busy store.
2. The Door That "Hates" the Floor (The Dragger)
If you see scratch marks on the metal plate at the bottom of your door, or if you have to lift the handle just to get the door to open, your door is dragging.
Doors are heavy! Most commercial glass doors weigh hundreds of pounds. Over time, the hinges or pivots (the parts the door spins on) start to wear down. It’s like the hinges on an old gate—eventually, they sag and drop.
Don’t ignore this! If a glass door drags on the floor, it creates “edge tension.” Glass is incredibly strong on the flat side, but if you put pressure on the edge, it can shatter. You’ll walk in one morning and find a pile of glass on the floor instead of a door.
The Friendly Fix: We can usually “re-hang” the door by replacing those worn-out pivots. It’s a quick fix that makes your door feel like it’s floating on air again.
3. The Mystery of the "Ghost" Lock
Have you ever struggled to lock your door at night? You’re turning the key, you’re wiggling the handle, but it just won’t click? Most people think they need a new lock or a new key. But 90% of the time, the lock is fine—the door frame has just shifted or the door has sagged. If the door isn’t lined up perfectly with the hole in the frame, the lock bolt has nowhere to go.
The Friendly Fix: We don’t usually have to change your keys or your expensive hardware. We just need to realign the door so the lock and the frame are “friends” again. It saves you the cost of a locksmith and the headache of new keys!
4. The "Wind Tunnel" Effect
If you’re sitting inside your shop and you can feel a cold breeze coming right through the front door even when it’s closed, you’re literally paying to heat the sidewalk. There’s a strip of rubber or brush at the bottom of your door called a door sweep. These wear out, get brittle from the sun, or just fall off after years of use.
The Friendly Fix: Replacing the weatherstripping is one of the cheapest ways to lower your energy bill. Plus, it keeps dust, leaves, and bugs from crawling into your store! A tight seal makes your entrance look and feel much more professional.
5. Why Your Handle is Wiggling
A loose handle makes your whole business feel “cheap” or neglected. Commercial handles take a beating. People pull on them all day long, often with more force than they need. The screws inside eventually vibrate loose.
The Friendly Fix: Sometimes it just needs a specialized tool to tighten it back up. Other times, the internal “pull” mechanism is stripped. We carry most common storefront door hardware in our trucks so we can fix this on the spot without a second trip.
6. The Foggy Glass Look
Does your door glass look “dirty” even after you wash it? If it looks like there’s fog or moisture trapped inside, you have a “blown seal.” Most storefronts use double-pane glass for insulation. There is a seal that holds dry air between the panes. If that seal breaks, moisture gets in and stays there.
The Friendly Fix: Unfortunately, you can’t “clean” the inside of the glass. We’ll need to measure and order a new piece of insulated glass. It’ll make your store look 100x better instantly and help your AC work more efficiently.
7. The Emergency Exit (Panic Bar) Problem
You know that long metal bar you push to get out? That’s called a panic bar. If it’s sticking, making a loud grinding noise, or won’t latch properly, it’s a major safety hazard. These have a lot of tiny springs and moving parts inside. If one tiny piece of metal snaps or gets jammed with dirt, the whole bar can stop working.
The Friendly Fix: Fire marshals are very strict about these. If your panic bar doesn’t work perfectly, you could get a fine or even be forced to close until it’s fixed. We can repair or replace these to make sure your customers can always get out safely in an emergency.
